Get Started with the Easy BadBlue Tutorial!
What's that little window?
|
That's the BadBlue console. Because BadBlue is really a powerful little
web server, you can stop and start the web service whenever you want.
Most of the time, though, you can simply minimize the window or move it
out of the way. It's always available in the system tray (the lower right
hand corner of the screen).
If you just want to use BadBlue as a web server, click the
Set your searching options link and set Gnutella
Sharing to No. Exit, then restart the server and
BadBlue will only act as a web server and not perform peer-to-peer
activity.
|
|
How do I get started?
BadBlue is an easy way to let your PC share files with others.
First thing you'll need to do is to determine what to share. Click on
the Manage tab, then click Setup search tab.
This will let you select files or even entire folders that can users can
search from the Search tab.
Later on, if you wish, you can even
password protect shared areas and
enforce other security rules to protect
your data from unauthorized access.
|
|
Select files or folders to share
Select a file to share. Even if you want to share an entire folder,
select a single file, click OK on the file box and then check the
Share all files in this folder checkbox. Then press the
Share! button. Do this as many times as you need for the
different files or folders you need to share.
When you're done
setting up files and folders for searching, just
click on the Search tab in the upper lefthand corner.
For more information on search options (including full-text searching),
visit the Search setup FAQ page.
|
|
Setting up the Folders tab
Now that users can search for shared files, you can also
set up your Folders tab (where users can view the folder contents
by exploring, not searching). To set up a folder, click on the Manage
tab, then click Setup folders tab.
Type in the name you would like the folder to be called, then select any
file in the folder, and press the Add virtual directory
button. That's it! The folder will be instantly available under the
Folders tab for your users to explore.
Just like search files, you can easily
password protect your folders.
|
|
Set searching options
Search options lets you define how to search in a peer-to-peer setting.
You can usually leave the default settings until you
need to fine-tune search results. If you
use a proxy server, you will need to set your proxy information if
you would like to have BadBlue search outside the proxy.
Once options are configured,
click on the Manage tab and then on
Connect to friendly machines.
Note: If you want to use BadBlue as a web server only,
set the Gnutella
Sharing option to No. Exit, then restart the server.
BadBlue will only act as a web server and will not perform any P2P
activity.
|
|
Add friendly machines
BadBlue uses a configurable version of the
Gnutella protocol to sustain open or closed
sharing networks.
BadBlue can find friendly machines automatically
or you can specify friendly machines to which to attach.
If there are colleagues or friends you wish to connect with, specify
their IP address or domain name and port number (e.g., fredjones.d2g.com
or 11.22.33.44:8000) and press the Add! button.
You're ready to start searching!
|
|
That's it! You're ready to search!
From the Search tab, enter your search terms.
You can use file extensions
(e.g., xls, mdb, doc) if you wish.
Matching search results will appear on the Search Results page (right).
When you find
a useful result, right-click on the file name and select
Save Target As... to download it. Or, for certain
file formats like
Access,
Word and
Excel, click on
the Live View! link to display the live data
in your browser window (see inset).

|
Let friends or colleagues surf to your PC
Now that you've set up BadBlue to share or publish files, you can
set up your own domain name
(like jsmith.dyndns.org) for your PC.
This makes it easy to
have your colleagues or friends surf to your PC and search for, display
and/or download the files to which you've given them access.
The Troubleshooting guide
provides a review of the steps necessary to let
external users connect with your PC.
While remote users can see your main menu, they are only able to
search for the files you've specified.
Your administrative menu options can only be
controlled by you, from your PC. If you want to password protect your files or otherwise secure
access to your PC, please read the BadBlue Security
FAQ.

Want to set up a private sharing network?
If you need to set up a private file-sharing network (for instance,
inside a corporate LAN environment or between computers inside and outside
the firewall), the following documents can help:
Gnutella Sharing FAQ
Common Gnutella Deployment Scenarios FAQ
These documents describe the typical configuration settings for private
networks.
