Tutorial: Password-Protecting Files

Step 1

The Manage tab (highlighted in yellow at right) is used to manage your BadBlue server. Click the Manage tab.

Step 2

Click the Define Users link (highlighted). This will let you create custom user-names and passwords for visitors to your PC.

Step 3

Enter a user-name and a password for one of the people who will visit your PC. Click the 'Add User' button (highlighted) to create the user account. Repeat for as many users as you would like.

Step 4

Once you're finished defining users, click the 'Manage' tab again.

Step 5

Click the 'Password-protect files' link (highlighted). This will let you choose the folders or files that will be password-protected. Folders that aren't protected this way will be visible to anyone who visits your PC.

Step 6

First choose the shared area that should be password-protected.

Note: if password-protecting Excel Spreadsheets for web sharing, remember to check the Allow Updates button! This will allow logged-on users to modify the spreadsheet in addition to viewing it.
Leave the 'Choose users' area blank -- this allows any defined user to access the folder.

Or, instead of leaving the users field blank, name one or more user-names separated by commas (mary, joe, beth, sam) to name the specific users that will be allowed access.

When ready, press the 'Require user authentication' button.

Repeat this process for each shared area that should be protected. However, please note that each shared area should only be listed once on the password-protection page. If all named users need access, leave the users field blank. Or if you need to specify multiple users, separate each user-name with a comma (e.g., mary, joe, beth, sam).

Step 7

To test password-protection, select a shared area that you protected.

If it was a search area, click on the Search tab, enter a search term and then press 'Go!' (highlighted). When search results appear, try to download one by right-clicking on it and choosing 'Save target as...'. You should be prompted for a user-name and password.

If you protected a folder, click on the Folders tab, then select the protected folder. You should be prompted for a user-name and password.
