Tutorial: Peer-to-peer Sharing
|
BadBlue makes it easy to set up private, peer-to-peer sharing networks. If you have
colleagues who want to share files with you (and vice versa), peer-to-peer sharing
makes it easy.
Important: make sure that all PC's in the network have
used the basic search tutorial to configure searching
-- and tested that searches work -- before running through this tutorial.
It's also important to test that you can browse to the address you're adding as a
friendly PC (or, at least, they can add you as a friendly PC). Just enter the
address of the other BadBlue PC in your browser. You should see the BadBlue
main menu. This will confirm that you can connect to the other PC.
|
Step 1
The Manage tab (highlighted in yellow at right) is used to
manage your BadBlue server. Click the Manage tab.
|
|
Step 2
Click the 'Connect to friendly machines' link (highlighted). This will let you
choose the other PC's with which you can share files.
|
|
Step 3
Enter the domain or IP address of another PC running BadBlue, then press
the Add button. Examples might include:
fred.dyndns.org
joe.dyndns.org:8888
24.25.0.111
Repeat for as many PC's as you'd like to add to the network.
Important: make sure you can surf
-- using your web browser --
to each address you're adding.
This will confirm that you can connect to the other PC.
|
|
Step 4
After adding one or more friendly PC's, press the Search tab (highlighted).
|
|
Step 5
On the search page, enter a term that you know will match the shared files on
the network (e.g., MP3). Then press the Go button.
|
|
Step 6
When an interesting search result appears, right-click on the file-name
and select Save target as... to save the file.
Important: when starting up in peer-to-peer mode, you may
need to search several times before seeing responses from all systems on the
network. This is only necessary when connecting to other systems for the
first time.
