How do I define user accounts?
User accounts are necessary before
password-protecting your files. Please refer to the
Defining Users FAQ page for the
complete details on user accounts.
In short, BadBlue can use the
Windows user accounts that already exist on your
system or you can manually define users through the
Manage >> Define users menu.
How do I password-protect files?
The Manage >> Password-protect files menu
lets you:
Choose a shared area
Choose users
The Shared area field lets you select from one
of the shared
areas that you have defined using the Manage menu. For example,
if you used the Setup search tab or the
Setup folders tab) to define shared areas,
those areas will appear in the Choose a shared area list.
The Choose users field lets you specify one or more
users (e.g., Arnold,Jeb,Michael) who will have access to the
shared area. Note that if more than one name is listed, each name
should be separated by a comma.
Note: if you leave the Choose users field blank,
any logged-in user will have access to the shared area...
but they will still be required to log-in first. Leaving the
Choose users field blank is an easy way to let any
valid user access the area, but still deny access to anonymous users
(who have not logged-in).
You can choose user names that you have defined in BadBlue
or users that are defined on the
local Windows system.
Can each user have their own area for uploads?
Yes. If you would like users to have secure
upload/download capability in their own folders - keeping their
files separate from one another - you can simply change BadBlue's
upload type.
Security is automatically managed for you
using the Each user has a folder upload mode.
See the Upload FAQ page for more information.

Can I control access to virtual directories ("Folders")?
Yes. Simply add a virtual directory from the main
menu using
Manage >>
Setup folders tab and then add the directory
to the controlled access list using
Manage >>
Password-protect files.
Can I control access based upon user?
Yes. The Choose Users option on the
Manage >> Password-protect files
menu
allows you to specify one or more user-names (separated by
commas) who are allowed access to the shared resource(s).
Or use BadBlue Enterprise Edition's
Windows security capabilities to
leverage Windows user accounts. For example, specify:
joe,lisa,roger,mary
You can also leave the user field blank, in which case any
defined user will be able to access the shared area, as long
as they log-in to BadBlue. See the
Defining Users FAQ for more information
on users and password-protection.
Can I password-protect the search results page?
Yes. Use the following steps to password-protect all search
results, so that only logged-in users can view the file names
after a search.
Use the Manage >> Setup Search tab menu
and add the BadBlue file called search.htx (this file is
in the folder where BadBlue is installed, usually
c:\program files\badblue\pe\search.htx).
Use the Manage >> Password-protect files menu
and select the shared area you just created (search.htx).
Then click on the Require user authentication button.
Can I control access to a normal web folder?
Yes. Using the instructions above, create a "dummy" virtual
directory which represents the conventional web folder
you wish to protect (e.g., c:\program files\badblue\pe\car_pictures).
Then add the dummy folder to the controlled access list.
