What is a friendly machine?

It's another PC or server that is running BadBlue (or, for non-business applications, any Gnutella servent). It's referred to by DNS name or by IP address (e.g., mypc.d2g.com or 10.10.24.18).

How do I find a friendly machine?

There are three ways to find friendly machines:

  • BadBlue can find friendly machines automatically (see below).
  • If you know the IP address or DNS name of another machine running BadBlue, you can add it manually using the Connect to friendly machines menu option.
  • Once connected to at least one other machine, BadBlue can find additional friendly machines through the Gnutella protocol.

To find friendly machines automatically, BadBlue is configured to read a web page that lists other Gnutella servents. This gives it a list of other servents to which it will attempt to attach if Gnutella sharing is enabled.

If configured properly, you can begin searching immediately after starting BadBlue. To check to see whether Gnutella sharing is enabled, use the Set your searching options menu. If Gnutella sharing is Off, you can switch to to On, press Update, exit BadBlue completely and then restart it (e.g., use the Windows Start button at lower left and then select the BadBlue icon).

For complete details on Gnutella sharing, please review the BadBlue Gnutella sharing help center.

My IP address changes each time I connect. Is there an easy way to get a DNS name?

Yes. You can use a dynamic IP mapping service which will give you a DNS name regardless of your IP address. For example, DynDNS is a domain naming service that allows you to sign up for a domain name such as jsmith.dyndns.org. A naming service makes your computer accessible continuously by associating a domain name of your choice to your currently assigned IP address.

Starting with version 2.1, BadBlue includes a Dynamic DNS client that allows you to easily set up your own DNS name through DynDNS.org. For complete instructions, visit the Dynamic DNS Help Center or install a copy of BadBlue and click on Manage >> Manage domain name so that you can configure the name.

If you would simply like to find out your own current IP address, you can select the Connect to friendly machines menu option. Text near the top of the page will specify your current IP address or DNS name, which you can then email to friends or colleagues.

Can other users control my machine?

No. If someone surfs directly to your machine and clicks on any of your personal menu options (e.g., Manage shared files or any of the other main menu topics), they will receive an Access denied error message. Only you can change your machine's settings and you must do so from the machine itself. For more information on BadBlue's security features, please see the security help center.
